London Museum announces free Roman exhibition in rediscovered vaults

Visitors explore Roman artefacts in atmospheric underground museum vaults

London Museum has announced that its rediscovered underground vaults at Smithfield will open with a free exhibition on the city’s Roman beginnings. “Londinium: the making of a Roman city” is scheduled for spring 2027, following the museum’s main opening on 28 November 2026.

The exhibition will focus on the first 50 years of Roman London and include previously unseen objects from the Bloomberg Collection of Roman artefacts. Archaeological evidence will be combined with projection, spatial sound and sensory storytelling to explore daily life, trade and conflict in the early settlement. The vaults form part of one of London’s largest recent cultural redevelopment projects. Admission to the exhibition will be free, while detailed booking arrangements are expected closer to the opening date.
