UK accepts all 44 recommendations on regulating AI in healthcare

The UK government has accepted all 44 recommendations from the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare. The proposed model moves beyond one-off approval towards monitoring AI-enabled medical devices throughout their working life, with patient safety, transparency and routes for redress built into the framework.

The MHRA has also opened applications for phase three of its AI Airlock regulatory sandbox. It will test post-market surveillance with developers and healthcare partners, while draft guidance on how to manage AI products that change over time is due by December 2026. A full implementation roadmap covering all recommendations is expected by spring 2027. For patients, the change is intended to speed access to useful tools without weakening oversight.
