IPPR urges UK to make EU membership a medium-term goal

The Institute for Public Policy Research has urged the UK to make EU membership a medium-term goal, arguing that closer ties are not enough to meet the security and economic challenges posed by Russia, China and an unpredictable United States. This is the think tank’s recommendation, not a government policy decision.

IPPR says its polling found 52% support for rejoining and 29% opposition before undecided and non-voting respondents were excluded. The report recommends first building durable political support at home and in Europe; it does not propose an immediate referendum.
